At the international IWA Water Loss 2026 conference held in Rio de Janeiro, the global water loss management community witnessed the launch of one of the most important technical publications dedicated to District Metered Areas (DMAs): the manual “Interpreting and Using DMA Data”.

Developed under the coordination of the International Water Association Water Loss Specialist Group, the document represents the result of two years of international collaboration involving 16 subject matter experts from 12 countries. The manual provides more than 200 pages of practical guidance, operational insights, and real-world experience for DMAs of all sizes and configurations.

Today, DMA management is considered one of the fundamental pillars of effective water loss reduction and efficient distribution network management. By sectorizing water systems and continuously monitoring flows and pressures, utilities can rapidly identify hidden leaks, abnormal consumption patterns, unauthorized usage, and operational inefficiencies. However, collecting data is only the first step. The real value comes from correctly interpreting and using that data to support operational decision-making.

The newly launched manual directly addresses this need by covering topics such as:

  • minimum night flow interpretation;
  • pressure analysis and management;
  • abnormal network behavior identification;
  • SCADA and hydraulic model integration;
  • leakage assessment methodologies;
  • DMA optimization strategies;
  • prioritization of interventions and rehabilitation works;
  • operational best practices for DMA implementation and management.

In the foreword, Stuart Hamilton highlights that the publication is part of the Water Loss Specialist Group’s ongoing commitment to advancing both the science and practical application of water loss management.

The project was supported and promoted by Stuart Trow and benefited from the contribution of a large international team of authors, reviewers, editors, and technical experts. Among the contributors are Anna Bojko, Katarzyna Chwastek, Tom Crowder, Igor Dundović, Guillaume Féry and many other professionals involved in the development and review of the manual.

For water utilities, consultants, engineers, and NRW (Non-Revenue Water) specialists, this publication represents an extremely valuable technical resource. The manual can support both day-to-day operational optimization and the development of long-term strategic water loss reduction programs.

The manual is available for free download from the official IWA resources platform:
